- Current moisture reduction systems can be classified as sedimentation, mechanical dewatering, and thermal drying based on the moisture removal fundamentals. Among these methods, mechanical dewatering systems have been widely implemented due to their economic operational cost and satisfying dewatering outcomes. However, these dewatering systems often have limited application ranges in terms of particle sizes. For instance, dewatering screens can effectively handle lumps but severe blocking issues may occur while dealing with fine particles (-10mm), and in the case of fine concentrates (-3mm) filter presses or horizontal belt filters are opted for instead. Many studies in terms of moisture reduction for various commodities have been conducted with the focus on additives, but limited research has been published regarding particle size ranges. This study investigates the feasibility of using vacuum dewatering on iron ore with coarse size fraction (-16mm) and reveals the potential problems associated with the method. Various cake thicknesses, vacuum pressures and dewatering times were tested with the outcomes presented and discussed in this paper.
